"Custom Jeans"

Given it’s a Friday, chances are pretty good you’re wearing a pair of jeans today. If we could talk honestly for a moment, I wonder whether those jeans fit you right. Are they comfortable? Are they the correct length for those adorable flats? Is the waistline gaping behind you? How do they feel when you sit down?

Maybe it’s time to look into some custom-made jeans. I’m seriously considering a pair myself. My J. Crew outlet jeans just aren’t doing it for me anymore. I hate to admit this, but I am between sizes. The old size feels too small and the next size up, well, I just can’t go there yet. So I’m seriously considering ordering a custom pair online at indiDenim.com. Women’s jeans start at $135 which is a lot for me to spend on jeans, but according to a fashion consultant I recently interviewed, they’re worth every penny.

Here’s why: With indi jeans, you select from three distinct styles. The SoMa jean, for example, “hugs your hip and thighs, giving you a sleek, modern look. The forward side seams are designed to make you look fabulously slim, and the SoMa’s straight cut waistband sits a bit higher in the back to give just enough seat coverage.”  Sounds perfect. Seat coverage has gone missing in recent years and it’s time to bring it back.

Once you’ve picked the style, you are on to the fabric. Select a lightweight fabric with 2% lycra or a mid-weight denim and then choose your favorite color blue. Next select the rise, the leg and the closure. Don’t need a coin pocket? Loose it! Seriously, what woman can get a quarter in and out of a tiny pocket jammed against her hip bone? Certainly not yours truly.

I will confess I was having a lot of fun creating my jeans until I got to the back pocket. Here I was stumped. There were too many choices—pocket size, shape, embellishments, oh my! Once I got through that step, and selected my pocket distressing, sanding, whiskering and tacking it was time to bring out the tape measure and enter in all of my stats. Honesty reigns supreme here, ladies. There’s no point in fudging it when you’re making your own custom pair of jeans.

Once I got through that process, I saw the following disclaimer on the site. “In a very few instances, certain body proportions may result in a pattern that falls outside of our manufacturing capabilities. In the unlikely event we cannot accommodate your fit request, we will contact you by phone or email.” Good to know.

But wait, you’re not done yet. There are still a host of other questions to answer. What’s your tummy shape? (Average). How do jeans typically fit your waist? (Not great). When a jean fits well on your hip, how does it fit in the waist? (Too big). These are questions I have never been asked before, not by any sales person in any retail store, you? And the generous return policy means you can send your custom jeans back for a new pair or a refund if you’re not completely satisfied.

So now that I’ve done all the work making my jeans and saving my profile, I think I’m going to order them! Just please don’t tell my husband. The price tag is beyond what I would typically spend at my local designer outlets. I hope that fashion consultant was right when she said they’re worth every penny. I’ll let you know.
