Pairing shoes with jeans is a critical skill.
And now that you’ve got your perfect fitting pair of (indiDenim) jeans, don’t ruin your custom denim with the wrong pair of shoes. So, how do you decide what shoes to wear with what jeans, you ask?
Well remember, your feet and your legs have a close relationship (after all, they have to get along, they are right next to each other). So when thinking about one, you must think about the other, as well. It’s only fair.
For the ideal shoe yin to your denim yang, you first must consider the color of your jeans. Darker jeans tend to be “fancier” and the best jeans for going out (shout out to our last blog! Loves it!), while lighter, distressed denim is generally considered more casual. But whatever jeans you choose, your shoes should be the same degree of dressiness.
When planning out what shoe to wear with what jeans, you should also consider the cut of your pants. If you’re wearing flare jeans for example, the more “substantial” your shoes should be. A little ballet flat will get lost and it will look like your jeans ate your feet. Yum.
Bootcut jeans scream for cowboy boots or even knee-high boot. The wider your pant leg, the more comfort room you have for boots underneath your jeans.
Wondering about shoes with your skinny jeans? We go for a sexy high heel or flat. But because skinny jeans hug nicely to your ankles, you actually have wiggle room to show off a variety of footwear—even sneakers if you wanna be casual.
So, when customizing your jeans with indiDenim, be sure to put on a pair of shoes before giving us your inseam measurements. With wider jeans in particular, it’s important that the bottom of your pants reach close to the ground. It looks awkward if they are floating somewhere above your feet. Trust us.
And don’t be afraid of color! Really, does any color NOT look good with jeans? Not only can you pair your shoes with your jeans, but go ahead and match your shoes with your top or even your accessories. Have fun with it. After all, if your feet look good, your jeans look good, and girl, you look good.

Skinny jeans, it’s time to meet your match. Enter: the boyfriend jean.
In case you just happened to miss one of the biggest fashion trends this fall, the boyfriend jean has stepped on the scene as a form of backlash against the skinny jean.
You see, where skinny jeans are tight and fitted from your butt to your ankles, boyfriend jeans take a different approach to molding to your beautiful body.
Boyfriend jeans, as their name implies, are meant to look as though you had borrowed jeans from your man (and here at indiDenim, we fully support stealing clothes from your significant other). And although they don’t necessarily have to be hijacked from your bf, they must be loose and relaxed all around.
Now here’s the key. Boyfriend jeans combine the best of comfort and style, but since this jean is designed to look two sizes too big, you must be careful not to end up looking disheveled and frumpy.
So pair your best pair of boyfriends with a cute T or sweater and your favorite heels or ballet flats. Add a scarf, and you and your boyfriend jeans (sans boyfriend) are set for a lovely fall afternoon at the farmer’s market or, of course, a therapeutic trip to the mall.
Need some visual inspiration? Just check out Halle Berry in her boyfriend attire.

But before we go, we need your input. You see, we’ve been a bit torn about the boyfriend jean since it made its debut. indiDenim is all about *perfect* fitting jeans, and given that the boyfriend jean is pretty much the antithesis of your perfect fitting pair, what’s a custom jean company to do?
So we’re asking you! What do you think? Should we break down and add it to the line up? Or should we hold our ground and stand by the denim ideals we’ve grown up with? Leave your comments and help us decide!

Big booties need big bootie jeans.
But before we go any further, let’s give the obligatory shout out to Beyonce, J-LO, and Kim for helping big booty ladies all over love their beautiful behinds. It’s about time that we all celebrated our greatest ass-ett (sorry, I just couldn’t resist the opportunity for that one).
And celebrate we would, if only finding the right pair of jeans to cover your trunk was not one of the most daunting tasks of our earthly lives.
So before embarking upon the search, let’s prepare mentally. This may sound a bit odd, but sometimes you need to think about jeans like you think about a bra—you need a sturdy, supportive pair that can lift and shape your big booty.
Now that we’re in the right mindset, how do we find that perfect big booty jean?
Well, here are some basic tips on how YOU can design your own pair of indiDenim custom jeans to make sure that the marriage between your big booty and your denim does not end in divorce:
* Stretch it out! Ideally, you want to choose stretch denim (jeans with a combination of cotton and spandex) that will stretch to fit your backside. You don’t want to look like you’re about to lead Suzanne Somer’s next workout video, but your jeans should have enough stretch in them to be able to shape—and cover—your voluptuous bottom.
* Dark denim all the way! To optimize your butt, stay away from light-washed jeans because they’ll just make your hips look wider. It’s important to embrace the big booty, but when finding a great pair of jeans, it does not need to be the main event. If you pick a darker wash jean, it will slim your body…and your behind. Also, be sure to pick a dark pair of jeans with back pockets close to the center. Lower down pockets will just make your big booty look bigger. And please, don’t bedazzle your pockets. Your booty is decoration enough!
* Pick a classic boot cut. If you pick a “regular” pair of jeans—aka not skinny jeans or other denim that’s blatantly styled—it will draw less attention to your rear. Skinny jeans, in general, are a bad choice because they cling to your ankles, and therefore draw attention to your thighs.
* Confidence, sister! Remember, there’s a reason why Sir Mix-A-Lot wrote a whole song dedicated to your back side. Your big booty is to be celebrated, so untie that sweatshirt from around your waist and be proud of what you’ve got. Now, with the perfect fitting pair of big booty jeans, you and Ms. Kardashian over there have absolutely nothing to hide.

Last week, I pulled a muscle trying to tuck my jeans into my boots. Yes, I know, beauty is pain, but something tells me this pain could have been avoided.
So after recovering from my mild back injury, I started to think—there must be thousands upon thousands of people (just as uncoordinated as I am) who encounter this wretched problem every week.
Intent on putting an end to all tuck-induced leg cramps and back injuries nationwide, I have compiled a list of tips every jean-tucker should know.
So here are the deets:
First, whether you’re wearing hot black leather boots or rockin’ the ugg, the boot tuck will be easier with a narrower leg opening. By picking jeans with a slim cut and tapered leg, you’re dealing with less material, which will avoid bunch ups above the boot and make the boot/jean meeting place look seemingly seamless.
After you put on your jeans (stay tuned for our forthcoming blog for the art of putting on pants), check the length of your jeans. If they fall longer than your ankles, fold them over.
Now it’s time for the sock tuck. REPEAT: Before stuffing your jeans into your boots, you must first stuff your jeans into your socks.
I’m repeating this, not because you didn’t hear me the first time, but because I’m need to remind myself. I’m a serial offender of the sock tuck first rule. And let’s just say, nothing good ever comes of it. Just broken mirrors… Don’t ask.
So, back to the sock tuck. For success, choose a longer pair of socks or even knee-highs that you can then lightly scrunch down. Avoid ankle socks. They aren’t ideal and your jeans will just end up popping out the second you bend over to put your boots on.
After your jeans are secured into your socks, you are ready for the boot! If you’ve tucked properly, your boots should slip right on…and there you go. We like ‘em, Britney likes ‘em, that guy behind her likes ‘em…and you my friend, look fabulous.

Throughout their 136 year history, we’ve seen jeans of all types. From the baggy 90’s grunge look, to the 70’s elephant bells, we thought we’d seen it all.
But we were wrong. Very wrong.
Enter the new Fall ‘09 trend, the jegging. You’ve probably already heard all about the jegging, but if not, here’s the low down:
A jegging is a cross between a legging and a jean (kind of like a liger). But more specifically, it is a legging with belt loops, pockets, and a faux fly tacked on. The fabric even comes with a denim print!
So far, the jegging has received mixed reviews. And not to take sides or anything, but at indi, we’re partial to real jeans (jeggings aren’t actually denim). No offense or anything, jeggings. We’re still cool with you and all…
Well, whether you’re a fan or a foe, this trend is definitely worth a second look.

Whitney Port sporting jeggings

Beyonce rockin’ her jeggings
...Plus, it’s pretty hard not to do a double-take. They are quite a sight to be seen.

And now another solution to a problem we barely knew existed.

Checking out our own butts. In dressing rooms.
Jeanswest, a denim retailer in Australia, just came out with butt cams for 3 of their stores. Yes. Butt cams. No more straining the neck for these lucky Aussie gals!
Checking out one’s junk in the trunk has never been easier, or more technologically advanced.
And since we know you are wondering…
1. No, the cameras aren’t recording (recorded, no; closely monitored for the entertainment of store personnel, probably).
2. No, there aren’t plans for butt cams in American locations—yet.
3. Yes, the CEO of Jeanswest is a man. Who else would come up with such a brilliant idea, like a butt cam? And for the record, we’re betting he is keeping a “close eye” on the success of these butt cams.
4. Yes, butt cams in dressing rooms are only the beginning. Just wait till you see what they come up with next.
The future will be an interesting place.
If you fear for the children of tomorrow, you are not alone.

Thank god for low rise jeans…
Unfortunately, they’ve produced an unseemly side effect: the muffin top. You know, that horrendous phenomenon where a person’s belly—usually their love handles—hangs ever so gracefully over the top of their fave pair of jeans?

(credit: christopherfountain.wordpess.com)
And by gracefully we mean, not gracefully.
So, given that we’ve seen FAR too muffin mishaps in our time, we’re calling out to denim lovers everywhere to wake up, snap out of it, take a good, long look in the mirror—and then follow these denim dos to help us rid the streets of the dreaded muffin top!
#1 DO: Get jeans that FIT. You think it’d be pretty obvious, right? Don’t buy a pair of jeans if you have to squeeeeeeze the button shut. How comfy can it be to be constantly bulging out of your jeans, anyways? Buy jeans that cover your curves. And, of course, we recommend custom jeans.
#2 DO: Add an inch or so to the back rise. Fortunately more people are catching on to the muffin top problem, and are opting for pants that sit a little higher in back but still low rise in the front. This is how we make our jeans at indi. By adding a little to the back rise, we ensure appropriate coverage of this “problem” area, while still avoiding the “mom” jeans look.
#3 DO: Wear a long shirt. The problem of a too tight/too low waistband is only half of the muffin top battle. If, say, the above unfortunate fashion victim had invested in a better fitting, longer shirt, the love handle overhang wouldn’t be such a big offense.
Bottom line—don’t try to squeeze it all into somewhere it doesn’t belong. Trust us, the people walking behind you will thank you.

And now for your weekly history lesson. This week’s subject is Amelia Bloomer and her pants.
During the 1850’s, Amelia Bloomer created an uproar when she appeared in public wearing a bifurcated garment—a garment that splits into two parts, covering each leg separately. Americans were horrified by the “scandalous” outfit pictured below.

By today’s standards, Amelia’s bloomers look downright conservative, but Victorians were not ready for this revolutionary silhouette. The press mocked women who wore bloomers, calling them hermaphrodites. Even the suffragettes refused to adopt this controversial clothing style, thinking that pants were a distraction from more important woman’s rights issues, such as the right to vote.
Little did Amelia Bloomer know, her puffy pants would blaze a trail for the blue jeans that women all over the world wear today. During the first part of the 20th century, women who wore pants (and especially jeans!) shocked the public with their audacity. But with repeated exposure, the public finally began to accept the style. By the 1980’s pants and jeans of all sorts were considered appropriate attire for women at home, school, and work.
So if you’re a woman and jeans make up a big part of your wardrobe, it’s probably about time you pay your respects to trail blazer, Amelia Bloomer. Come to think of it, we here at indi have a lot of thanking to do ourselves. Without Amelia, we might have had to start a custom dress company…

Cuffed jeans? Fashionable?
That’s right. Cuffed jeans CAN, in fact, be fashionable. The key is starting with the right jean. Remember, a cuff can’t perform miracles. So if you start with an ugly jean and add a cuff, you will (surprisingly) end up with an ugly cuffed jean. On the other hand, if you have a great skinny, tapered, or even straight leg jean that already compliments your curves, try rolling it up once or twice. Go a little crazy; see what happens.
Now you should know, cuffing is truly an art. And as an art, it may take you years to master. Cuffing your jeans requires creativity and vision, because there isn’t just one way to cuff!
Your cuff (clearly) depends on your outfit. Feeling traditional? Stick with a smaller cuff (~1.5 inches). When you’re ready to mix it up a bit, try venturing out a little further to the land of the the high cuff (recommended for cuff experts, only).
Like most things, practice makes perfect. And when you are experimenting with new fashions, you may want to test your new style in front of those who know and love you for who you are on the inside. Who knows what trouble one bad cuffed jean decision may cause…
So to help you out with you cuffed-jean trials and tribulations, we suggest you take a look at some of the pretty people who are doing their part to bring fashion to the plebs. Aw, they are sooooo self-sacrificing, aren’t they?

Two and half years ago, Anne Whitacre left her home in Seattle and moved to Los Angeles to start a new job at a high end design firm. She soon found out that her work wardrobe (which consisted mostly of wool skirts, sweaters, and dress suits) wasn’t going to cut it in the LA designer jean world.

“The entire office dressed in jeans and black t-shirts or sweaters,” Anne said. For a lot of us (and all of us here at indi), a “jeans and tee” work environment is like a dream. But for Anne, it was a different story.
“I’m 5’9” and usually wear a size 12, but have a round backside, a flat stomach, and athletic thighs,” Anne explained. “In a designer jean, I typically wear a size 31, which fits my waist, but strangles my thighs and backside. And I’m small enough in the waist that I don’t fit into “women’s” sizes either. This leaves me stuck in between the two size groupings, without a single pair of jeans that fit.”
Struggling to find a pair of designer jeans made for her body, Anne surfed the net and came across indiDenim. “I was able to choose the style of jean I want and then finely tweak the fit and sizing - this was very appealing to me,” Anne said. “And the jeans at indi are comparable in price to what I was paying for designer jeans that weren’t custom made for my body.”
Anne ordered a pair of straight leg custom jeans that fit comfortably around both her waist and her thighs. “My custom indiDenim straight leg jeans are the perfect length, have a medium low rise in front and a high enough rise in back - and most importantly, they do not cut off the circulation in my thighs!”
“I had this theory that if I could have found the perfect jeans in college, I would still be wearing them. That didn’t happen! Now, at age 55, I’ve finally found my perfect pair of jeans.”

Ask women what it’s like to feel sexy, to look sexy, and most women could probably make your ears bleed in a matter of minutes. Ask what makes a jean sexy, and all the sudden you have a much more philosophical conversation on your hands. So, what is a sexy jean? And what makes a jean sexy or not?
Is it the same things that makes butts and legs look sexy? Is our brain stimulated by clothed legs and, by default, the clothing on the legs? I guess that harkens back to the adage of old “Is it the man that makes the clothes or the clothes that make the man?”
Well, ladies, in this post we briefly discuss two things: lines and butts. As you’re reading this, know that you are just a few clicks away from finding out what will make your jeans so… well, sexy!
Lines
The lines of the jean determine the silhouette. To create a sexy silhouette for your body type, take a deep breath, zen out, strike a yoga pose… Do what you’ve got to do to think BALANCE!
If you’ve got great hips and your girlfriends are always complimenting you on your hot “hour-glass figure,” then choose bootcut or flare to balance the curvature of your hips.
If you’re long and thin, there are a number of leg openings you can go with that compliment those lengthy lines. Narrow, straight leg, bootcut, wide leg and flare are all in your repertoire. Go crazy.
Round and rectangle? Mid-rise bootcut jeans will slenderize and tenderize those lines for a truly sexy look.
Making your lines pleasing to the eye is dependent upon what you think is sexy on you, so sometimes the best advice is to go with your instincts. You can only pull off a style if you look and feel comfortable, so make sure you pick a style that YOU feel good in!
Butts
In our world at indiDenim, we think about pockets - a lot… and it shows. Seriously, let’s face it. Butts attract our attention for a reason. And depending on who you ask, butts are pretty sexy all by themselves, but you can’t just go around mooning people to attract the attention you crave in that direction now can you?
Not unlike shaking your tail feathers, our human nature urges us to embellish, embellish, embellish! Sexy jeans call for sexy pockets, embroidery or embellishments.
For ideas about what back pocket embellishments will work best for your particular body type, check out our post “Flattering Your Assets”.
Want to see more options? Check out our pocket portfolio in the next post and vote on your favorite sexy back pocket for jeans from indi. And remember, at indi we put you in control of designing a sexy jean that’s perfect for just you. Once you’ve designed your jeans, come back here and tell us what worked for you!

Special thanks to everyone in Northern California who has visited our design studio in Emeryville to be among the first to try our Intellifit Virtual Fitting Room (TM) or VFR. We’ve gotten a few really cute comments throughout this process… One woman came in and said that our custom jeans fitting room looked like something out of an Austin Powers movie. Ha! To me, its cylindrical glass walls and shiny framework would fit in perfectly as the glass elevator in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
In any case, finding jeans that fit in the San Francisco Bay Area just got a whole lot easier. Our VFR is helping men and women of all shapes and sizes find jeans that actually fit. We’ve scanned female athletes with the ever-problematic Serena sisters’ quads, moms who don’t want to wear mom jeans, women who don’t fit their mom jeans like they used to, dudes who know how to dress, and guys with bellies who have sworn that they will never wear suspenders. Yes, we’ve fit jeans on just about every shape and size you can think of.
I was recently asked how old this technology was and my answer was an “uhhhh…a few years?” And actually, my guess was right! Intellifit technology (around 200 mini antennas applied to a fitting room environment) has been around for exactly a “few years” and has scanned over 230,000 people since 2003. So, in actuality, the technology (i.e. antennas) has been around since the late 19th century, though I doubt that Thomas Edison would’ve ever thought to use an electromagnetic field to fit and fashion custom jeans.
The experience in the VFR is much like the wave of a magic wand. As the wand revolves around your fully clothed body, the virtual fitting room is recording hundreds of thousands of measurements based on the coordinates that your body occupies in space. Then poof! The result is a list of full body measurements accurate within one centimeter.
So, in case you didn’t already know, finding jeans that fit in the Bay Area of California just got easier! Click here to schedule an appointment for your own personal or group custom jeans fitting at indi.

We just had a final fitting for our new women’s plus size style today. Ladies, it looks great and we can’t wait to launch it. The indi brand is all about making sure we can offer jeans for everybody so expanding in to the plus size is really important to us. The plus size jean will have all the great pockets and options as available in our current 5 pocket styles SoMa and Noe, however the pattern is contoured especially for plus curves. Look for our new “Ashbury” style plus jean at the end of January!

Great for flattering a variety of figures and very forgiving of a little added holiday flab, the wide leg trouser is an extremely fashionable way to diversify your denim wardrobe from the waist down.
When you order a pair of women’s wide leg trouser jeans on indidenim.com be aware of what shoes you will wear with this style. No matter what leg width you sport, if your jeans make you look like you’re preparing for floods the long lean look will be a complete wash! For the wide leg, factor in your ideal heel height so that your custom hem will just barely graze the ground. We definitely recommend wearing this style with a great pair of heels for a dressy look you can take to work or out on the town!

What are the hottest denim trends rocking the season’s night scenes that are not going to be in next seasons out box?
Our fashion forecast reads that the slim silhouettes that fortified our wardrobes for Fall will definitely NOT be flying South for the winter. You can look forward to stretching a spring and even maybe a summer out of the skinny, slim and straight leg jeans in your drawers.
This fall, we saw jeans tucked into boots and it was the hottest thing to hit the jeans scene since the skinny itself busted out last year. Now, with lots of semi-formal festivities staring us all in the face, we’re seeing this style kept on personal playlists for winter wardrobes with the added feature of keeping our stomachs on tight holiday budgets. Bonus!
If you’re still wondering how to make hot denim buys this year that will grow in popularity and versatility for next year, consider venturing into the winter wonderland of dark denim.
Dark or black denim with matching or minimal pocket detailing is the easiest to dress up with holiday flare. Try introducing a satin slit sleeve top and stilettos. As your shopping for that perfect fit, also keep in mind that you’ll need enough stretch to comfortably sway to the hottest new songs come spring.

Know Your Seat Shape
The female backside comes in all different sizes in shapes, but we’ve broken it down into four basic types: flat , average , prominent , and full . For each seat shape you can customize your jeans to use visual tricks to your advantage, whether your goal is to minimize the booty or play up a luscious look.
Type 1- Flat Seat
For a flat seat, create the illusion of curves with prominent backside styles. Pocket flaps are in high demand right now, and you’ve got the ideal shape to rock this fashion. We recommend indi’s standard pocket with flaps for day-to-day classic style. If you want achieve a sexier look, the curved pocket with flaps can round out a flat rear in a way you never imagined possible.
Type 2- Average Seat
If you have an average seat, the world of premium denim is yours to play in and the sky is the limit. Whether your preference is for simple pockets or cutting edge embroidery, you can pull off any look. For the no-frills chick, we recommend indi’s take on modern vintage with sanded and distressed pockets . If you’re looking for some fabulous flair, check out the emblem embroidered pocket in your choice of four different colors.
Type 3- Prominent Seat
Be proud of your curves, and don’t be afraid to show them off! But remember, no elaborate pocket styles are needed to draw attention to your derriere. A standard pocket shape works best with your figure, and subtle embroidery can go far to accentuate a round seat. Two of our favorite styles for this body type are the orchid embroidery in a two-colored scheme and the scroll embroidery in navy for those feeling flashy.
Type 4- Full Seat
Like the women who fall into the “prominent” category above, you can definitely use denim to show off a shapely feminine figure. Still, if you’re looking to visually minimize your backside, there are a few simple rules to follow. Remember to steer clear of pocket flaps , and always avoid curved pocket shapes. When customizing for your body type we recommend a standard pocket shape, either plain or with subtle decoration like indi’s loop embroidery in your choice of three different color schemes.
No matter what your shape and size, the design is in your hands with indi’s customized denim. Visit www.indidenim.com to view our entire range of style options and build the perfect jeans for your unique body type.
