Denim Blog

Mom jeans.  The bane of our maternal existence.

First thing’s first.  As hard as it is to accept your pre-bump jeans may never look the same, we have to look to Nike for our catch phrase here… “just do it!”  You will be saner, believe me.  Consider fitting back into your old designer denim jeans a bonus to tackling your life-long goals for fitness, but don’t keep them hanging in your closet as a goal (or a dreaded reminder) of what used to be. The best way to get over your old pre-mom jeans will be getting excited about what new looks will flatter your post-baby body.

You birthed your child, you can live without jeans for a while, right?  Wrong.  The American uniform is a hard thing to live without for however many months it may take you to get back to your target weight.  We suggest investing in one pair of comfortable stretch jeans that fit your baby protecting body, but don’t spend an arm and a leg.  If all goes as planned, these jeans won’t fit for long.

If you’ve ever found yourself on the hunt for extra long jeans, you would know that finding extra long jeans and actually buying extra long jeans are two very different challenges.  So why does the price tag grow as the inseam grows?  Does it really cost that much more for jean companies to tack on an extra inch?

The Answer: simple supply and demand.  Since there are fewer people out there who need extra long jeans, there are also fewer denim companies who will make extra long jeans, and so it goes, the ticket price matches the rarity of the commodity.  Ouch.  Economics hurts sometimes, huh?

The first time I met my future mother-in-law she commented to her son lovingly, “Well, her legs go all the way to the ground, don’t they?”  Yep, somewhere in the middle of the-hip-bone-is-connected-to-the-knee-bone-and-the-knee-bone-is-connected-to-the-ankle-bone, I got stuck with these lengthy legs.  Now, I’m not complaining (these babies come in handy now when reaching for things on top shelves at the grocery store and jumping over puddles), but is it just me or do twiggy, tall teenage girls seem to go through an abnormally long awkward stage before arriving at their adult statures?  I mean, really.  Tall skinny girls, I’d say between the ages of 13 and 16, have a really hard time finding jeans that fit their waist and their inseam.  I will confess that I, too, have been caught in high-water jeans and have burned many an elementary school picture in fear that I may be found out as the criminal of fashion high-treason that I am.

Well, there’s good news for all of us.  indi enables you to design your own reasonably priced pair of custom-made premium jeans tailored to fit your inseam and your wallet.  In fact, we are no strangers to orders for extra long jeans whose inseams reach upwards of 37 inches. After you place your order at indi, pick a heel height for your jean so that, regardless of how tall you are to begin with, your extra long jeans go all the way to the ground along with those extra long legs!

I’d like to take the time to talk about body shape, and how to make yours work for you.

Some of you might have already noticed that when shopping for the “Ashbury” plus size jean, our body questions are a little different from the other styles. If the illustrations aren’t clear enough, here’s a quick guide to what each body type really looks like, along with a few do’s and don’ts to help you find the best fitting jean (even if you aren’t interested in plus size jeans).

The Inverted Triangle- The Best Fitting Jean

What it Looks Like: Top heavy, broad shoulders, large bust, narrow hips, thinner legs, wider waist.

What to Wear: Items that divert attention from shoulders and bust, flare or boot cut legs, embellishments that accentuate the seat and lower body. The goal here, especially for plus sized women, is to not give attention to what you already can’t ignore. You’re top heavy already, so try to give the illusion you’ve got more going on below the belt than you actually do.

What to Avoid: Straight leg or tapered jeans

Hourglass- The Best Fitting Jean

What it Looks Like: Symmetrical shoulders and hips, full bust, defined waist, shapely legs.

What to Wear: It usually isn’t very hard for you to find something to wear, even as a plus. Boot cut jeans are always safe, and rise is (almost) a matter of preference in this case.

What to Avoid: Ultra low-rise jeans, plus anything too tight or skinny.

Rectangle- The Best Fitting Jean

What it Looks Like: Straight up and down, if you have curves they aren’t defined, you gain weight pretty evenly across your whole frame, undefined waist, broad back.

What to Wear: Anything with a close-body fit, flaps on the seat, jeans with a fade (to give your thigh some shape)

What to Avoid: Straight cut

Circle (aka Apple) - The Best Fitting Jean

What it Looks Like: Fat distributed in the abdomen/chest, relatively slimmer thighs and upper legs, a “top heavy” appearance, full bust, waist and upper back.

What to Wear: Lighter washes, whiskering, high rise (contains the tummy without cutting into the stomach).

What to Avoid: Skinny legged pants, boot cut

Triangle (aka Pear) - The Best Fitting Jean

What it Looks Like: Shoulders are narrow compare to hips, large hips, smaller waist. It’s the opposite of the inverted triangle.

What to Wear: Boot cut, dark washes, a crease

What to Avoid: Too much embroidery, capri’s, flaps on seat

Average- The Best Fitting Jean

Luckily for the average girl, just about anything will work. There aren’t any pitfalls to be aware of! The average plus sized woman can use the style tips for dealing with specific areas, e.g. staying away from flaps if she has a larger seat. Otherwise, just do what feels right.

No matter what your style or size, indi has the look for you. By following these guidelines, the best fitting jean for your body type is easy to find. At indi, we’re all about helping you look and feel great

Know Your Seat Shape

The female backside comes in all different sizes in shapes, but we’ve broken it down into four basic types: flat, average, prominent, and full.  For each seat shape you can customize your jeans to use visual tricks to your advantage, whether your goal is to minimize the booty or play up a luscious look.

Type 1- Flat Seat

For a flat seat, create the illusion of curves with prominent backside styles.  Pocket flaps are in high demand right now, and you’ve got the ideal shape to rock this fashion.  We recommend indi’s standard pocket with flaps for day-to-day classic style.  If you want achieve a sexier look, the curved pocket with flaps can round out a flat rear in a way you never imagined possible.

Type 2- Average Seat

If you have an average seat, the world of premium denim is yours to play in and the sky is the limit.  Whether your preference is for simple pockets or cutting edge embroidery, you can pull off any look.  For the no-frills chick, we recommend indi’s take on modern vintage with sanded and distressed pockets.  If you’re looking for some fabulous flair, check out the emblem embroidered pocket in your choice of four different colors.

Type 3- Prominent Seat

Be proud of your curves, and don’t be afraid to show them off!  But remember, no elaborate pocket styles are needed to draw attention to your derriere.  A standard pocket shape works best with your figure, and subtle embroidery can go far to accentuate a round seat.  Two of our favorite styles for this body type are the orchid embroidery in a two-colored scheme and the scroll embroidery in navy for those feeling flashy.

Type 4- Full Seat

Like the women who fall into the “prominent” category above, you can definitely use denim to show off a shapely feminine figure.  Still, if you’re looking to visually minimize your backside, there are a few simple rules to follow.  Remember to steer clear of pocket flaps, and always avoid curved pocket shapes.  When customizing for your body type we recommend a standard pocket shape, either plain or with subtle decoration like indi’s loop embroidery in your choice of three different color schemes.

No matter what your shape and size, the design is in your hands with indi’s customized denim.  Visit www.indidenim.com to view our entire range of style options and build the perfect jeans for your unique body type.

Making the Cut

Choose the denim cuts and style elements that are designed to work with your figure, not against it.  In the era of a skinny jean trend, it may be tempting to jump on the bandwagon, but remember that the surest way to stay stylish is to know your own body.  Be conscious of what works for you.  We suggest considering the classic bootcut—its slight flare toward the hem draws attention away from a round belly by balancing out your lower half.  Pair the style with heels to elongate your legs, and you’ve got a thoroughly modern look that can outshine any passing fad.

There are plenty more tricks of the trade to minimize and disguise the belly.  For instance, try a zipper instead of a button-fly to reduce bulk near the waist. And for the average woman, a mid-rise trumps a low-rise because of the coverage it offers and the way it visually divides the torso and lower body.  Fabric and color play a role, too.

Material Girl

Selecting the right fabric can make all the difference.  If you’re left frustrated by stiff denim material that doesn’t forgive even the smallest of flaws, stretch denim may offer the comfort you’ve been missing.

Stretch denim, a blend of primarily cotton and just a touch of spandex lycra, gives you a more accommodating fit and ease of movement.  One word of caution on stretch: don’t go a size smaller and assume the fabric will make up for it.  Clothes that pinch too tight never look sharp, and the wearer may become the unfortunate recipient of dreaded “muffin top” gossip.  Nobody deserves that!

Dark Wash Is the New Black

Darker shades are slimming, so take advantage of the illusion and avoid lighter washes!  We recommend selecting a wash like indi’s own Midnight or Out of the Blue. A dark jean will keep looking chic and new, long after other styles fades.
