Stretch Denim Care 101
Getting a pair of stretch denim to fit for their entire lifespan starts with finding stretch denim that fits to begin with. You should look for stretch denim that not only fits your body like a glove, but also has great memory (meaning they stretch and then shrink back to their original form) - something that you will find in all jeans from indi!
Once you've gotten this perfect stretch denim jean (hopefully from indi), the way you wash your jeans is key. Here are a few tricks to help maintain the color, structure and feel of your stretch denim (in order of importance):
1. You should wash your stretch denim as infrequently as possible. In fact, avoid washing your denim at all costs.
If you do have to wash...
2. Always turn the jeans inside out.
3. Follow the care label instructions.
4. Wash on the gentle cycle with like colors.
5. If absolutely necessary, tumble dry LOW, but never until the denim is completely dry. Take your stretch jeans out of the dryer when they're still a little damp and lay them flat to dry the rest of the way.
Following these simple steps will ensure that your stretch denim maintains its integrity to the best of its ability.

Also, what are some good reasons to actually wash your jeans: getting peanut butter on them, spilling strawberry juice on them, going for a month in between washes? Or would you go even longer if you kept the sticky toddlers and food away from the jeans?
Thanks!

This blog post was particularly geared towards stretch denim wearers (of which there are many). But here’s my advice anyway:
1. Wear your jeans, but consciously avoid sticky situations if you can.
2. Spot clean your jeans when need be to avoid washing altogether.
3. Steer clear from peanut butter like the plague.
All of the reasons you listed are good reasons for washing jeans.
As far as advice for keeping toddlers sticky fingers away from jeans… You got me! Maybe you can write a blog post on that??
On 04-17-2009, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) said Actually I had been thinking the same thing when I read the post about the no jean washing! lol
However I do have a question…. since your jeans are made to order, wouldn’t it pretty much solve the whole shrinkage issue if the bolt of fabric (denim) was washed and dried (in a dryer) a couple of times to get the shrinkage out of the fabric first, and only THEN cutting the jeans pattern pieces out of the pre-shrunk denim?
On 04-21-2009, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) said Hey Melissa,
Brilliant thought. Thank you so much for your comment. As a seamstress, have you tried this method on any other fabrics?
You’re right in that all of our jeans are made to order and pre-shrunk post-assembly (ie treated, washed and dried… in a dryer).
The embellishments and treatments have to be performed on the raw denim post-assembly because it makes the most sense in terms of resources (ie we’re not washing 300 tons of denim that we cut off in the patterning process later).
If you’ve thought of a way to curb this effect, let us know! That’s a million dollar idea!

On 09-05-2009, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) said I bought a pair of Indi stretch jeans a few months ago at a women’s clothing store in Mendocino. I wear them at least two or three days a week. They are not custom made but they look like they are, best-fitting and most comfortable jeans ever!
They do stretch out, especially in the knees, after a few wearings, so I wash them, following label instructions, to bring them back to shape. When I wore them for a couple of weeks straight on a recent trip to Europe, I feared I had ruined them as they were baggy around the knees. They shrank back to shape when I washed them at home and look fine now.
They are my first pair of stretch jeans. A few years ago, a friend of mine had a pair of stretch jeans, not Indi and probably poor quality, and she said they lost their shape very quickly, so she advised me to be aware of fit problems.
